Standing Desks – Should I convert?

Standing desks are becoming more and more popular due the benefits they have on our posture and indeed our general physical wellbeing (we spend far too much of our time sitting down as it is), but historically they weren’t cheap and a variety of standing desk conversion kits came onto the market.

Designed to sit on top of your existing desk they were a quick fix, offering you all of the benefits of standing whilst you work but without the cost, but are they really the best choice in the long run?

Made up of a number of ‘platforms’ typically sitting a-top a scissor action framework that allows you to adjust the height to your desired level, some of the earlier entrants to the market weren’t the most stable and any relief from being able to stand whilst you work was quickly negated by the awkwardness of using these contraptions.

Of course the build has improved, but you still need to consider the cost saving against what is essential a ‘fix’.

Opting for a new height adjustable desk (or indeed simply the frame as you can often keep your existing desk top) means you get a sturdy, uncluttered work space which provides much more than a plinth for you laptop or PC (I for one still like to work with paper, particularly when getting creative).

Another advantage of choosing a height adjustable desk is that it can be adjusted or better still switched between set heights, at the touch of a button, which allows you to switch between sitting and standing quickly and easily, something a standing desk conversion simply can’t do.

Some standing desk conversions have of course tried to address the issues of working area and stability, but in doing so the costs have gone up.

Our recommendation: If you want a standing desk solution that is going to provide all the benefits without any of the hassles, it’s worth spending that little bit more on a new height adjustable desk and not a conversion.
